Order for Taking the ARE 4.0

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

My planned approach is to execute the exams in batches 3, 3 and 1. Hopefully repetitive content on similar exams should assist my memory. Even if similar content doesn’t come up on the exams, I’ll be studying familiar material that hopefully assists my understanding. Knowing how lateral forces act on a concrete structure might help me remember the ratio of stone to sand to cement. (Roughly 7:5:3. It’s in compression, so it makes sense to have more stone.) So in one way I would be attacking both structures and methods and materials.

After office discussion and forum reading/posting, I was influenced to start with Construction Documents. Plus I was told getting a pass letter boosts your confidence, so start with something you think you can pass. (Thanks, “just”!). No way am I starting with Building Design and Construction Systems (Methods & Materials). I have so much trouble remembering certain basics that I freak out. For example, where does the vapor barrier go in humid climates? I find those to be tricky questions, so Building Design is in the second batch of exams.

I expect to reschedule the first three exams. But below is my expected order, with the currently scheduled exams noted:

Construction Documents & Services CDS (Aug postponed)
Programming, Planning & Practice PPP (Sep scheduled) (Pre-Design)
Site Planning & Design SPD (Sep scheduled) (Site Planning)

Building Design & Construction Systems BDCS (Jan) (Building Design and Methods & Materials)
Structural Systems SS (Jan) (General Structures and Lateral Forces)
Schematic Design SD (Feb) (Building Planning)

Building Systems BS (Apr) (Mechanical & Electrical Systems)

From what I’m reading, I think Site Planning should be closer to Programming, Planning & Practice. I placed Schematic Design in the second batch, because I suspect there may be a lag time in a pass/fail response, since it is all graphic. Actually all exams have a graphic component now, so in general the pass/fail letters may take longer than the two to four weeks mentioned on the forum. So essentially I’ll be studying for three exams for two to three months and then take three exams about two weeks apart. I have to throw a disclaimer on this. I will reschedule, if I think I’m not ready.

The Saga Continues…

Guess what! (You can’t make this stuff up!) When I went into 1 Penn Plaza to take the Construction Documents and Services test on Monday, the system didn’t work! For some reason the exam wouldn’t start on the computer. The staff called tech support, but were not able to resolve the problem. It happened to myself and a young lady also taking the ARE. (She was taking structures. Hello out there!)

I was there at 8:30 am on the dot, for a 9:00 am exam time. After the problems, the Prometric representative explained if they can’t get the system to work for your appointment time they have a half hour to resolve it. If they can’t resolve it they are to give you a ticket number for you to reschedule. At least that’s what he said. Both of us waited until 9:40am and the Prometric rep gave us a “Prometric Care Card.” That’s what he called it, with a ticket number to reschedule.

Well I was disappointed, but it was in my best interest. (The young lady there seemed to feel the same way too.) This was a sign saying we needed more preparation to assure a pass on the exam.

I had read B141 and A201 once, read some study material and completed the 3.1 and 4.0 building sections.  Compare that to Justdrawinglines, who read B141 and A201 twice and read two sets of study materials! When I mentioned I read the contracts once to the young lady taking structures, she shook her head as if to say that’s not enough. So I need to keep preparing! This mishap really works in my favor! Now I can re-read my highlights, complete the alternate vignettes posted on the ARE forum, redo 3.1 and 4.0 bldg sections and read some study materials. I’m on my way, baby!

I’m not sure, if I’m ready.

My first exam, Construction Documents and Services, is scheduled for Monday, August 11th.

I don’t know if I’m ready. Right now I’m reading the AIA B141-1997 standard form commentary. I have to read the commentary for A201-1997 afterwards. On the weekend I spent two hours on the practice software doing the 4.0 building section vignette. I feel confident I can get the section problem done in an hour. I still need to practice the software and problem.

My final day to reschedule the exam is tomorrow, Thursday. I’m not sure, if I’m ready. It seems the closer I get to the exam the less confident I feel. I hope it’s that I’m psyching myself out.

I simply want to pass my first exam.
