Momentum

Trump calls it the ” Big Mo’ ” in Think BIG and Kick Ass in Business and Life by Donald J. Trump and Bill Zanker. In the chapter titled ” Big Mo’ “, Trump discusses the American general contractor Bill Levitt, who with his father and brother, is responsible for Levittown, NY and many other housing developments produced after World War II.

Trump explains that Levitt, after achieving a great deal of success, sold his company to ITT Grinnel. He then slowed down professionally. As a part of the sale of his company, Levitt agreed to not build in America for a period of time. Instead of acting nimbly as Levitt would, ITT Grinnel acted like a large bloated company and attempted to solve problems by throwing money at them. ITT ran the company into the ground and eventually Levitt, who wanted to regain his previous business, purchased back his company.

But it was too late, he had lost his momentum. He had lost that forward momentum of behavior and industry trends and even lost that connection with contacts. He could not renew his former entrepreneurial success and would never again attain his former status socially or financially.

Levitt employed a method that divided construction into divisions. His success in mass house production using these methods shaped modern construction methods, payment schedules and specifications. How could such an influential business leader not succeed? He stopped. Don’t stop.

Have I lost my Mo’? No. But it has really slowed down. It’s a Slo Mo’, not a Big Mo’. Don’t lose your Mo’. Stay connected with others taking the exam. Keep reading/studying after you finish an exam. Don’t put down your books! The longer a break you take, the longer it takes for you to reach back up to that study schedule. I can attest to that as I struggle this weekend to find study time. A problem, I would not have had three months ago.

(Here is an article on Bill Levitt that is more thorough than Trump’s explanation.)
