SS Study Week is Over

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

My study week for the ARE Structural Systems exam is over. Was it worth it? Yes.

Still I rescheduled because I became more and more confident that I wouldn’t be ready. I focused primarily on Ballast (the ARE Review Manual) and I looked at a few AREforum threads. What did I learn?

  • I’ve got to know certain basic formulas and units. Formulas like moment, stress, strain, modulus of elasticity. Know that statics stuff.
  • Then understand structural “decision-making” when using wood and steel. Basically know how to choose (calculate) a beam or column size. Same thing for masonry walls. Understand structural decision-making for concrete. Because it is a composite it’s more complicated, but still understand. (That could mean calculate beam size or rebar area. I’m not too sure. I’m still studying.)
  • Then understand lateral loading from wind and earthquakes. Understand it conceptually, oscillations, period, shear, diaphragm, reentrant corners. (Possibly understand some calculations. I’m not too sure. I’m still studying.)
  • Then methods and materials, like connections, material properties, welding symbols and terms like blocking and bracing.

I can be ready, I just need to keep studying.

The ARE Review Manual points out certain calculations are complex and likely not covered by the architect registration exam. They seem to make this assumption in part due to the exam’s time constraints. Two minutes per question (or whatever it is) does not permit certain in depth analysis per question. Still Ballast covers some International Building Code calculations for certain lateral loading calculations regarding earthquakes and some calculations for concrete beam size and steel area.

I’m concerned with how much calculations, I’ll actually need to understand. I’m confident that if I get my hands on enough questions to review, I’ll be able to understand the calculations to break them down into the ideas of the basic statics (moment, bending, load, stress, strain) and understand what happens to one component in a calculation (or formula), when another changes. I think the exam’s intent is a kind of basic structural understanding, that I’m still trying to get my hands on.

Structural Systems Vignette Tutorial

Here is a video tutorial that goes thru the Structural Systems vignette. It is half an hour long. Comments on the AREforum discussed that this may not be the best solution. Marc Mitalski, who might be the voice you hear, responded on the forum regarding those comments.

Here is the video: PREPARE SS Vignette Tutorial
This video is from PREPA.R.E., Inc (PREPARE).

Here is the thread on the AREforum, “link to watch vignette video“, where this was posted. Be sure to review the comments and criticism on that thread, when the forum is back online.

AREforum Down Again

The AREforum is down again. Looks like it might be a maintenance issue. I’m only guessing. In the mean time check out these AREforum Alternatives.

I only hope whoever maintains the forum is installing options to make it more secure. Or backing up information. Or possibly took the bulletin board down to address some legal issues before continuing. Perhaps someone’s posting behavior is jeopardizing the forum, from a malicious hacker or a poster of exam questions. I can only guess. I have come to realize there are some not-so-obvious concerns to address when you’re participating socially online. For example, how do you mention copyrighted material?

Let’s not forget whoever is maintaining/operating the ARE forum is putting out their own money. vBulletin 3.8 currently costs $195. The last time the forum was hacked, it was upgraded to the latest version. It is not free software. Put into context, it’s at least the cost of an exam. That’s only a starting point for the total costs. That doesn’t address hosting fees, paying for any tech support, time spent (meaning labor) and I don’t know what else. Even the url www.areforum.org costs something.

So let’s be patient for the ARE forum bulletin board to come back online. For now, check out some AREforum Alternatives while waiting.
